Your first RMT visit: what to expect

A walk-through of what a first visit with a Registered Massage Therapist at Fittopia Health Care looks like, from booking to what happens after you leave.

A registered massage therapist's hands treating a patient at Fittopia Wellness Studio.

Before you arrive

First, choose your location. Registered Massage Therapy runs at both Fittopia locations at the same session lengths and fees: the Wellness Studio clinic on No. 3 Road with Parry Yeung, RMT, and Fittopia Fitness Center on Alderbridge Way with Anthony Antolis, RMT. Each location books through its own Jane site, so pick the one you want before booking.

From there you can see live availability and book online. On a first visit you will also be asked to complete a short health history form, either in advance through the confirmation email or when you arrive; it covers your general health, any areas of concern, and anything your therapist should know before treatment begins.

There is no need to prepare anything special. Wear whatever is comfortable, ideally clothing you can move in easily. You will be shown to a private treatment room and can undress only to the level you are comfortable with once you arrive.

If you are new to the clinic, plan to arrive five to ten minutes early to settle in and finish any paperwork; returning patients can head straight to the treatment room.

The assessment

Every first visit opens with a short assessment rather than going straight to the table. Your Registered Massage Therapist asks about your health history and what brought you in, then takes a look at your posture and movement to understand where tension or restriction is showing up.

From there, the two of you talk through your goals for the session, whether that is easing a specific area of tension, supporting recovery after training, or general relaxation, and your therapist builds a treatment plan around that conversation before any hands-on work begins.

This conversation is also your chance to mention anything you would rather your therapist approach carefully, or avoid altogether, so the plan reflects what works for you specifically rather than a generic routine.

The treatment

During treatment, you are always properly draped, with only the area being worked on exposed, and you undress only to your own comfort level. Pressure is adjusted throughout the session; effective treatment does not require pain, so let your therapist know at any point if you would like more or less.

Your therapist blends techniques to suit what your body needs on the day. That can include therapeutic (Swedish) work for general relaxation and circulation, deep-tissue work for firmer pressure through tight layers, trigger-point therapy for tender, tight bands of muscle, and myofascial release for restoring glide between layers of tissue.

Sessions are available in 30, 45, and 60-minute lengths. A shorter session suits a single area of focus, while a longer one leaves room for more full-body work; either way, the same assessment-first approach applies.

After your visit

You leave with simple home-care guidance, covering things like stretching, hydration, or activity to support what was addressed in your session. If a follow-up suits your goals, your therapist suggests a cadence and never pushes more visits than you need; some patients come for a focused stretch of sessions, others prefer occasional maintenance visits.

Home-care suggestions are meant to extend what happened in the room, not replace it, and there is never any pressure to book more visits than fit your goals and your schedule.

Every paid visit comes with an official receipt for your extended health plan, including your therapist's registration number. At the clinic, direct billing is rolling out now: Sun Life is live today, with more insurers being onboarded. At the Fitness Center, direct billing is available for many extended health plans, confirm your insurer when booking. See Insurance & Direct Billing for the current status and what is covered.
