Your first acupuncture visit: what to expect

A walk-through of what a first visit with a Registered Acupuncturist at Fittopia Health Care looks like, from preparing beforehand to your follow-up options.

Before

Book online through Jane to see live availability with any of our Registered Acupuncturists, or choose a specific practitioner by name and browse their menu directly. Have something light to eat before you arrive; treatment on a completely empty stomach can feel less comfortable, and staying hydrated in the day or two beforehand helps too.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that rolls up easily around the arms and legs, since needles are often placed below the elbow and knee as well as on the torso and back.

Plan to arrive a few minutes early on your first visit, especially if you still need to fill out a health history form; returning patients can head straight to the treatment room once checked in.

The consultation

Your first visit opens with a conversation about your health history and what brought you in. Your acupuncturist blends a modern health intake with a Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment, which typically includes checking your pulse and looking at your tongue, to build a fuller picture alongside your history.

From there, your acupuncturist explains the plan for the session and answers any questions before any needles are placed. This is also the time to mention anything you would rather they approach carefully, or avoid altogether, so the plan reflects your own history rather than a fixed routine.

The treatment

Every needle used is single-use and sterile, opened in front of you and disposed of after your session. Most people feel only a light tap as a needle is placed, followed by a mild, dull, or heavy sensation once it is in; if anything feels sharp or uncomfortable, tell your acupuncturist and they will adjust.

The initial session runs 60 minutes, giving time for the full intake alongside treatment. Depending on what suits your goals, your acupuncturist may add electroacupuncture, a gentle micro-current on selected needles, cupping to ease tightness and support circulation, or scalp acupuncture, and will explain anything before it is used.

Once the needles are placed, you rest quietly for a stretch of the session while your acupuncturist checks in periodically. Many people use this time to relax fully, and needles are removed gently at the end before you take a moment to reorient.

After

Every paid visit comes with an official receipt for your extended health plan, including your acupuncturist's registration number. Direct billing is also rolling out now: Sun Life is live at the clinic today, with more insurers being onboarded. See Insurance & Direct Billing for the current status.

Follow-up visits come in 30, 45, and 60-minute lengths, so you and your acupuncturist can choose what fits your schedule and your plan of care going forward. Some people come in for a focused stretch of visits, others prefer occasional sessions; the pace is something you work out together.
