Sports and overuse injuries

Sports and overuse injuries cover a wide range of presentations, from a single sharp strain or sprain during activity to gradual-onset tendon pain that builds over weeks of repetitive load. Common examples include muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendinopathies such as tennis or golfer's elbow, Achilles tendon irritation, and the general soreness and stiffness that follow a heavy training block.

Presentations are shaped by the sport, the training pattern, and the individual, so the same activity can produce very different symptoms in different people. Some injuries settle quickly with load management, while others need a more structured, staged return to full activity, and overuse patterns in particular often build slowly enough that people keep training on them for a while before booking an assessment.

This page describes, in general terms, how our registered practitioners commonly assess and support sports and overuse injuries. It is educational information rather than a diagnosis of any specific injury, and a new or worsening injury is always worth a proper assessment before you decide how to manage it yourself.

How We Can Help

How we can help

Physiotherapy

Registered Physiotherapists assess the injury, your training history, and your movement, then build a staged plan that may include manual therapy, exercise prescription, and dry needling for irritable tissue.

At Fittopia Fitness Center, rehabilitation can continue directly onto real training equipment in the same appointment, supporting a progressive return-to-sport path alongside the personal training team, while clinic appointments at Fittopia Wellness Studio can progress into Clinical Pilates as strength rebuilds.

Registered massage therapy

Registered Massage Therapists commonly use sports massage, deep-tissue work, and myofascial release to support recovery between training sessions and help address tightness linked to overuse, adjusting technique to where you are in your training cycle.

Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine

Registered Acupuncturists commonly use acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and cupping alongside a TCM assessment to support recovery, and Fu's Subcutaneous Needling is used by the team for sports tendinopathies such as tennis or golfer's elbow, coordinating with the movement and rehabilitation services on site where useful.

Getting Started

Your first visit

A first visit typically starts with a conversation about the injury, your training or activity history, and your goals, followed by a movement assessment specific to the affected area.

From there, your practitioner explains what they are seeing and lays out a general plan for the weeks ahead. Hands-on treatment or guided exercise is common the same day, along with a general sense of how care will be staged over the coming weeks. Book online through Jane for physiotherapy, massage therapy, or acupuncture; extended health receipts are provided, and direct billing is rolling out now, starting with Sun Life.

Good to Know

Sports and overuse injuries FAQs

Should I stop training completely with an overuse injury?

It depends on the presentation, and your practitioner will talk through load management options at your assessment rather than a blanket rule. Many plans involve modifying rather than fully stopping activity.

Can physiotherapy, massage, and acupuncture be combined during recovery?

Yes, many patients coordinate all three across a training cycle. Mention your full training schedule so your practitioners can sequence care around it.

Do I need to be an athlete to book for a sports or overuse injury?

No. These presentations are common in anyone who trains, works physically, or is simply more active than usual, not only competitive athletes.

If symptoms are severe, sudden, or getting worse, such as intense pain, loss of function, a new or worsening head injury, or any other urgent concern, seek urgent medical care or call 9-1-1 rather than waiting for an appointment.
